New Speedy Site

This evening, at last we launched the new design of TELKOMSPEEDY.COM. This is the site for Telkom’s broadband internet product.

When our new (reconfigured) Multimedia division was (re-)formed, the then EGM ad interim, Mr Widi Nugroho appointed me personally to be the PIC of the main site of Speedy products, until a definitive unit could handle that tasks.  Just after a few days, I found out that the site was very complicated with unnecessary features and contents. Surely I tried to fix it. But at last I gave up, and decided to redesign the site to make it simpler, easier to operate, and more elegant. The redesigning itself was not easy. Our division is not the only stakeholder of the site. We needed to talk to at least two directorates, within which there are more units with interests to the site. I could not start the redesign before making a consensus among all stakeholders. Again, this was not easy. The consensus itself was at last accepted just last May.

The redesign would take months, but I planned it into stages. The visual redesign seen today is just the first phase. I will not expose the details here. But after the first stage, at least the site could be operated simpler, easier, with significantly less error than the previous maldesigned site.

Head First WordPress, by Jeff Siarto: An excellent book to explore the important features of WordPress as blogging platform and CMS, and to manage a well organized blog.

A couple years ago I wrote a booklet about WordPress, aimed to educate teachers and students to start blogging. The book was almost purely for novice, to use WordPress.com, to install WordPress.org, and to understand blogging world (feed, aggregator, communities, etc). This year I found that O’Reilly has published a book discussing WordPress: Head First WordPress.

As other Head First books from O’Reilly, it is rich with illustration, and clever metaphors to make it easy to understand the concept of WordPress. This is an O’Reilly, not a “For Dummies” book, so you could not expect a verbose explanation here. In brief but clear language and illustration, it discusses the concept of website and blogging, the installation of WordPress from the scratch, changing the blog’s look and feel, editing the themes. Things like webhosting selection, cloud computing, and Google Analytics are also explored. Then it explores some relatively advanced topics, including the use of plugins, multimedia services (podcast, video, etc), organizing, optimizing, and securing the site.

However, as the name implied, this is a book for starter: it does not review all features of WordPress. Features of WordPress Multiuser and Buddypress are out-of-scope. For seasoned WordPress users (or plugin developers), there are not so many new ideas to dig here. I will suggest this book for a new blogger or web designer who want to boost his/her blogging experience in short time.

One other thing: I think O’Reilly must publish the Kindle version. The current e-Book version is only in PDF format, and less enjoyable to read in Kindle.

Just yesterday my fellows bloggers/tweeters introduced me to an interesting site: FormSpring.me. Well, it’s a long holiday, so I gave it a try. Quite funny. Here in Indonesia we have a significant number of bloggers, tweeters, Facebook users, and other intensively-connected social networkers. I guess it will take only days for Indonesians to grab and use this service — cuz we have had the network! Finding friends etc is not a problem.

Here’s my account: FormSpring.me/Koen. If you know me personally, you would know that I always reluctant to answer personal questions. But with FormSpring.me, I feel it is obligatory to answer all questions. So far. Until I’m bored, I guess :). So, while I have no FAQ here, you may ask me questions there. You must signup, login, but you can make an anonymous questions then. I only accept questions from logged users just to avoid spams.

FormSpring.me itself is a new service provided by FormSpring. It is a service offering forms management for web sites.

On a small town of Leam, I saw a small cat shop. Curiosity might kill, but it took me inside the shop. Papers, cards, books, pins, and all cats accessories. Then I saw it: a fridge magnet, a small carved stone resembling a dark grey cat. A mystery emitted by its rough carving. Made in Devon, a county just beside Cornwall.
